Obituary, Florida Times Union. "James Cary's Brief Illness Proves Fatal, Former Duval Commission member Twice entered Congress Race. James G Cary; 54 former member of the Duval Board of County Commissioners and three times a candidate for representative to Congress from the second district, died Tuesday night at Hattiesburg. Mississippi according to word received here yesterday. The body will arrive here this morning and will be placed in care of the Seashole Funeral Parlors. No funeral arrangements had been made last night. Mr. Cary whose home was at 225 East Seventh Street, was visiting in Hattiesburg at the time he was stricken. Mrs. Cary was with him. As a member of the board of county commissioners from the first district for several terms. Mr. Cary took an active part in the political affairs of Duval County. and was one of the leader in obtaining the Navy's selection of Jacksonville as the site for its large Naval Air Station. Mr. Cary was elected to the County Commission in 1934 and served for six years, part of the time as chairman of the board. In 1940 he made his first race for Congress, not seeking re-election to the county post. He also was a candidate in 1942 and again in 1944. After leaving the County Commission Mr. Cary served for a while as a representative of the City of Jacksonville in Washington in the interest of good roads. In recent years he had returned to his business profession as a salesman and was on a business trip when he was stricken at Hattiesburg. Mr. Cary was born October 5 1891 at Crawfordville. Ga. but had resided in Jacksonville for many years. He was a Thirty-Third Degree Mason , a member of Morocco Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, and the Elks Club. He was an active member of the Main Street Baptist Church. In addition to his wife, Mrs. Bessie Hobbs Cary. he is survived by a son. Corp. James Daniel Cary. U.S. Marine Corps. who recently arrived at the San Diego Naval Air Base from Okinawa: three sisters, Mrs. Wylie Rhodes and Mrs. Anna Bentley, Atlanta Ga. and Mrs. Robert Corry, Robinson Ga. and a brother Watson W. Cary of Atlanta.".
